The Classic Two-Story Dilemma
A perfect use-case is a large two-story home. Heat naturally rises, leaving your upstairs master suite sweltering while the downstairs living room feels like a refrigerator. A traditional AC can't solve this without freezing out the bottom floor.
With a VRF system, we install two or more independent indoor air handlers connected to just one single outdoor unit. The system literally pulls heat out of the hot upstairs, and dynamically transfers that captured thermal energy directly into the cool downstairs room. One room gets ultra-quiet AC, the other gets heating, simultaneously.
Residential VRF is a different job from commercial
The technology is the same. What changes is scale, and what changes with scale is where the difficulty lives.
In a home, VRF is chosen for what it makes possible architecturally — no ductwork to hide, no soffits, individually controlled rooms, and outdoor equipment small enough to place discreetly. The design question is mostly about zoning and where the indoor units go.
On a commercial system the pipe runs are far longer, the refrigerant volume is much larger, and there are dozens of indoor units on one control network. Diagnosis becomes a matter of reading what the system reports about itself, and a fault code is where the work starts rather than a detail at the end.

What is the difference between VRF and VRV?
They are the exact same technology. VRV stands for 'Variable Refrigerant Volume,' which is a term trademarked by Daikin, the inventors of the technology. Other manufacturers like Mitsubishi and LG use the generic industry term VRF, or 'Variable Refrigerant Flow.'
Can a VRF system heat and cool at the same time?
Yes. When configured as a Heat Recovery system, VRF technology allows for heating and cooling simultaneously in different zones. It captures thermal energy from a zone that requires cooling and transfers it to a zone that requires heating, significantly increasing energy savings.
Is residential VRF the same as commercial VRF?
The technology is identical, but the work is not. Homes are chosen for architectural freedom and zoning. Commercial systems involve long pipe runs, large refrigerant volumes and dozens of units on one control network, where diagnosis starts from what the system itself reports.
What types of indoor units can I use with a VRF system?
A single outdoor unit can serve many different indoor styles at once, which is the main design advantage. Options include fully concealed ducted units, flush ceiling cassettes, vertical air handlers and wall-mounted heads. You can mix them room by room to suit each space rather than compromising throughout.
Are VRF systems noisy?
No, they are extraordinarily quiet. Because the noisy compressor is located outside, the indoor units operate at extremely low sound levels. Premium low-static ducted indoor units operate at sound levels down to 23 dB(A), which is comparable to the sound of rustling leaves.
