Burning or hot-plastic smell
Something is overheating inside a wall, a device or the panel. This is the one symptom with no benign explanation.
Outlet or switch warm to the touch
Usually a loose or degraded connection generating heat under load. Stop using the circuit.
Scorch marks or discolouration
Arcing has already happened here. The damage is visible, which means it is well advanced.
Buzzing or crackling from the panel
A loose connection or a failing breaker. Panels should be silent.
Breakers that will not reset
Either a genuine fault on the circuit or a failed breaker. Do not keep forcing it.
Lights dim when an appliance starts
Often a loose neutral, which causes voltage to swing. It also explains bulbs burning out quickly.
Breakers trip repeatedly
A circuit carrying more than it should, a fault, or a breaker at the end of its life.

Frequently one leg of the incoming service, a main lug problem, or a utility-side fault.

Sparking when plugging something in
A small spark on insertion can be normal. Repeated or large sparking is not.
What we find in houses wired before current code
Much of Los Angeles was wired decades before modern electrical code. None of the following is cause for panic, but each is worth knowing about.
Aluminum branch wiring
Common in homes built roughly between 1965 and 1973, when copper prices pushed builders toward aluminum for branch circuits.
Aluminum expands and contracts more than copper as it heats and cools. Over years of load cycling that works connections loose, and loose connections arc. The good news is that remediation with approved connectors at each device is a recognised fix — a full rewire is rarely necessary.
Lost or loose neutrals
The classic signature is lights dimming when a large appliance starts, often alongside bulbs failing far sooner than they should. A compromised neutral lets voltage swing above and below where it should sit, which is hard on anything electronic in the house.
Ungrounded two-prong circuits
Original to a great many older homes. Not an emergency, but no equipment ground exists, which modern appliances and electronics assume. There are code-recognised remedies short of rewiring, depending on what is actually in the wall.
Decades of undocumented additions
Circuits extended by whoever was available at the time, junction boxes buried behind drywall, mixed wiring types spliced together. This is why we trace faults rather than swapping parts — in an older house the cause usually has a history.
Bringing protection up to current standards
Fixing what is broken is one thing. These are the protections modern code requires that most older homes simply do not have.
Required in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, outdoors and other wet locations. Cuts power on a ground fault fast enough to matter.
Detects the signature of arcing — the failure mode behind many electrical fires — and interrupts the circuit before it ignites anything.
Installed at the panel. Protects everything downstream from grid surges, which matters more as homes fill with electronics.
Interconnected and hardwired where required, so one detector triggers all of them.
Many older homes have partial or missing grounding. It is what makes every other protective device work as intended.
Worth understanding
If a fault keeps returning, the panel itself is often where the answer lives.

Why do my lights dim when an appliance turns on?
Most often a loose neutral connection, which lets voltage swing as load changes. It commonly comes with bulbs burning out unusually fast. It is worth investigating rather than living with, because the underlying connection tends to degrade further over time.
Why does my breaker keep tripping?
Either the circuit is carrying more than it should, there is a genuine fault such as a short or ground fault, or the breaker itself has aged out. Repeatedly resetting without finding out which is the one approach we would advise against.

What is the difference between GFCI and AFCI protection?
GFCI protects people from shock by detecting current leaking to ground. AFCI protects the building by detecting the electrical signature of arcing, which is a common ignition source in electrical fires. Current code requires both in different parts of a home.

That pattern often points at one leg of the incoming service rather than a branch circuit, which can mean a main lug problem or a fault on the utility side. It is worth a call rather than an investigation, because the service entrance is involved.
