What it does

A panel that tells you what it is doing

A conventional panel distributes power and protects circuits. That is all it does, and for most of a century that was enough. A smart panel adds visibility and control at the level of individual circuits.

Circuit-level control

Every circuit individually monitored and switchable from an app. You can see what each part of the house is drawing and turn circuits on or off without going to the garage.

Circuit-level energy data

Not a whole-home total, but consumption per circuit. This is what turns "my bill went up" into "the pool pump has been running eighteen hours a day since March".

Solar and battery integration

Manages the relationship between generation, storage and the grid, and decides what stays powered during an outage rather than everything going dark at once.

Backup prioritisation

During an outage a battery cannot run the whole house indefinitely. A smart panel lets you decide in advance what keeps running and what sheds.

Dynamic load management

Large loads can be coordinated rather than all being available at once — which in some homes is what makes new equipment fit on the existing service.

The practical case

Where a smart panel earns its keep

The visibility is genuinely useful, but the strongest argument is about capacity.

A conventional load calculation has to assume large loads could run together, because nothing prevents it. That assumption is what determines whether a new heat pump or car charger fits on your existing service.

A smart panel changes that assumption, because it can actively manage which large loads run at any moment rather than leaving it to chance. In some homes that is the difference between the equipment you want fitting on the service you have, and a full service upgrade.

Whether it works out that way depends on your specific loads and how you use them, which is what the assessment establishes. It is not automatic, and we would rather tell you before you buy one.

When it makes sense — and when it does not

Strong case

  • You are replacing the panel anyway
  • You have solar, or are adding battery storage
  • You are electrifying several appliances at once
  • Capacity is tight and you want to avoid a service upgrade
  • Outages matter to you and you want control over what stays on

Weaker case

  • Your existing panel is sound and has plenty of capacity
  • No solar or battery, and none planned
  • You mainly want whole-home consumption data, which cheaper monitors provide
  • You are not planning to add significant new loads

Because it replaces your main panel, this is a service change — permit, inspection and utility coordination included. That is why it makes most sense bundled with work you were doing anyway, rather than as a standalone project.

What is a smart electrical panel?

What does circuit-level monitoring actually tell me?

It tells you which specific circuits are consuming what, rather than giving one household total. That is the difference between knowing your bill went up and knowing exactly which appliance caused it, and only the second version is something you can actually act on.

Does a smart panel replace my existing panel?

Yes, it takes the place of your main service panel rather than being added alongside it. That makes it a service change requiring a permit, inspection and utility coordination, which is why it is often done at the same time as a planned upgrade.

What happens to a smart panel during a power outage?

Without battery storage it behaves like any other panel with no incoming power. Paired with a battery, it decides which circuits stay energised and which ones shed, so your limited stored energy goes to the things you chose in advance rather than draining everywhere at once.

Is now the right time to install one?

The strongest case is when you are already replacing the panel, adding solar or battery storage, or electrifying several appliances. Bundling it with work that was happening anyway avoids paying twice for the permit, the utility coordination and the labour.
