The Furnace Is Usually Not the Problem

How often should a furnace be serviced in Los Angeles?
Once a year, ideally before the first cold night. Los Angeles furnaces sit idle for most of the year, so the heating season begins with a cold start after eight or nine months of dormancy. That long rest, not heavy use, is what causes most first-night failures here.
Should I repair my furnace or replace it?
Most furnaces are worth repairing and we will say so plainly. Replacement becomes the better call when the heat exchanger is compromised, the unit is near end of life, or repeated faults trace back to a system that was wrong for the house from the start. We quote the repair either way so you can compare.
How do I know if my heating system is sized correctly?
Only a load calculation can answer that. Heating capacity should meet your home's calculated load without exceeding it by more than 6 kBtuh for a furnace or 12 kBtuh for a heat pump. Oversizing is very common because installers match the outgoing unit, which was often sized by an outdated rule of thumb.
Is a heat pump a real replacement for a gas furnace in LA?
Yes. Heat pumps are roughly three times as efficient as natural gas furnaces and consume no fossil fuel on site. Los Angeles is a moderate climate, and a correctly sized heat pump here may need no supplementary heating at all — which removes the largest driver of heat pump operating cost.
Why does my furnace turn on and shut off after a few minutes?
That is typically the high limit switch protecting the heat exchanger from overheating, and low airflow is the usual cause. Restricted or dirty filters, crushed ducts, and closed supply registers all drive it. It is diagnosed by measuring external static pressure rather than by replacing the switch.
