Zones stay down and the fault typically spreads along the control wiring. A marginal connection left arcing can eventually damage a control board, which turns an inexpensive repair into a costly one.

If your Daikin VRV system is showing error code U4, your indoor and outdoor units have stopped communicating.

This is the fault we see most often on commercial VRV, and there is good news in that: it is usually one of the less expensive things that can go wrong.

What this means for your building

VRV units coordinate over a control wiring network that links the outdoor unit to every indoor unit. That network carries the instructions telling each unit what to do.

When communication fails, the system cannot confirm the units are responding, so it stops the zones it can no longer reach.

The important framing: this is a communication problem, not usually an equipment problem. Compressors, coils and fans are frequently in excellent condition. What has failed is the conversation between them.

Daikin resolves U4 further, and the sub-code narrows the search considerably:

How urgent is it?

Urgent, though not hazardous. No refrigerant is escaping and there is no safety risk. The problem is that affected zones have stopped conditioning and will not resume on their own.

There is a pattern worth knowing. A U4 that appeared once after a power event and never returned may genuinely have been a one-off. A U4 that keeps coming back is a connection getting progressively worse, and those do not stabilise.

What it typically costs

Low to medium — comfortably at the cheaper end of VRV faults.

The work is tracing a control network through a building: checking terminals, testing wiring, verifying connections. That takes technician time, particularly in a large building, but there is rarely an expensive part at the end of it.

Cost rises in one scenario. If a marginal connection has been arcing for months while the code was repeatedly reset, it can damage a control board. That converts a wiring repair into a board replacement, and it is entirely avoidable by diagnosing rather than resetting.

What causes it

  • Loose or corroded terminals — vibration and time work connections loose, and terminals in mechanical spaces corrode
  • Damaged control wiring — frequently caused by other trades working in ceilings and risers
  • A break in the daisy chain between units
  • Power interruption or surge — units restart out of sequence or a component is stressed
  • A unit that has lost power — one indoor unit on a tripped breaker drops off the network
  • Electrical noise from other equipment — a documented cause of intermittent U4 faults where the system stops and restarts after a few minutes

That last one is worth highlighting because it is so often missed. If your U4 comes and goes and the system recovers by itself after a short period, interference from other building equipment is a genuine candidate.

What happens if you leave it

The affected zones stay down, which in a commercial building means tenant complaints the same day.

The longer risk is progression. Control wiring faults rarely stay confined. A terminal loose enough to drop communication tends to loosen further, and the fault spreads to more of the network. What starts as one unresponsive zone becomes a floor.

  2. Identify which units have dropped off the network.
  3. Inspect terminals at the outdoor unit and affected indoor units for looseness, corrosion and heat damage.
  4. Test control wiring for continuity and damage across its run.
  5. Verify power to every unit on the affected branch.
  6. Look for interference sources where control wiring runs alongside other building services.
  7. Test control boards once wiring and power are confirmed sound.

  • Does it clear by itself and come back? That pattern points toward interference or a marginal connection.
  • Has anything happened recently? Power outage, electrical work, tenant build-out, or trades in the ceilings.
  • U9 — Transmission within the same system. Related but a separate code, and the one most often confused with this.
  • U5 — Transmission between remote controller and indoor unit. One level down in the control chain.
  • PJ — Field setting or PCB combination fault. Can follow board replacement, and sometimes appears after communication work.

What is the difference between U4 and U9?

Both concern indoor to outdoor communication, but they are separate codes. U9 refers specifically to transmission errors between indoor and outdoor units within the same system. Confusing them sends a technician looking in the wrong place, so the exact code matters.
