This is the practical reason to fix it rather than live with it.
From the occupant’s perspective, the controller looks fine. It powers up, it responds to touch, it displays a setpoint. It simply has no effect.
So the complaint arrives as “the air conditioning in this room does not work properly” — and whoever investigates checks the indoor unit, which is mechanically fine, and the controller, which appears fine. The fault sits in the connection between them.

Low to moderate. Nothing is being damaged, no refrigerant is escaping, and no safety issue exists.
The costs are comfort and energy. A zone that cannot be controlled may condition continuously, including out of hours, which is money leaving the building quietly.
