If your Mitsubishi City Multi system is showing error code 5701, the float switch connector on an indoor unit is loose.

This is one of the cheapest faults on the system to fix, and one of the least sensible to postpone — because of what the float switch is for.

What this means for your building

Ceiling-mounted indoor units produce condensate continuously whenever they run, collect it in a drain pan, and pump it away.

The float switch is the safeguard on that arrangement. It detects water rising in the pan and shuts the unit down before it overflows.

Error 5701 says that switch’s connector is loose. The protection may not be reliably connected.

Why a trivial fault deserves attention

Nothing is currently overflowing. The drain may be working perfectly.

The problem is that you have lost the thing that catches it if the drain stops working. Condensate drains block gradually through biological growth, and they do it silently. The float switch is what stands between a blocked drain and water coming through a tenant’s ceiling.

So 5701 is not a water problem. It is a warning that your protection against a water problem may not be in place — which is exactly the kind of fault that gets deprioritised and then regretted.

Nothing is being damaged, and there is no immediate leak. But indoor units sit above occupied space, and the consequence of an unprotected overflow is tenant property, ceiling and flooring remediation, and a liability conversation.

The repair takes minutes. The exposure while it is outstanding is disproportionate.

The realistic risk sequence: the connector stays loose, the condensate drain gradually blocks as they all do, the pan fills, and the float switch that should have caught it does not respond. Water then finds the ceiling.

  7. Look for signs of previous overflow — staining above ceilings indicates this has happened before.

That fifth step is worth doing every time. If we are already in the ceiling, clearing the condensate line removes the condition the float switch exists to protect against.
