What this means for your building

Every device on the control network has hardware dedicated to handling M-NET traffic — sending messages, receiving them, acknowledging them. A 6602 says that hardware has itself developed a fault.

The wiring may be perfect. The addressing may be perfect. The device simply can no longer do its part of the conversation, so it drops off the network and the zones it serves stop being controlled.

Urgent. A 6602 normally takes affected devices off the network and keeps them off.

The practical difference from a wiring fault is that 6602 does not come and go. A loose terminal might work intermittently as the building warms and cools. A failed transmission component generally does not recover. If you are seeing 6602, waiting will not help.

There is no safety hazard and no refrigerant loss. This is an availability problem.

What it typically costs

Moderate — more than a wiring fault, far less than a compressor.

The cost is driven by two things: which board carries the fault, and how accessible the affected unit is. A board in a rooftop outdoor unit and a board in a ceiling cassette above an occupied tenant space are different jobs even when the part is similar.

Worth noting: diagnosis still has to confirm this is genuinely hardware. Wiring problems can present in ways that look like a hardware fault, and replacing a board that was never faulty is an expensive way to not fix a problem.

What causes it

  • Power surges and lightning events — the most common origin, and the one worth checking first if you can recall a recent electrical event
  • Age and thermal cycling — boards in hot mechanical spaces or rooftop units degrade faster
  • Moisture ingress — particularly in rooftop equipment where a seal or gasket has failed
  • A prolonged upstream fault — a marginal connection that arced for months can eventually damage the component at the end of it
  • Manufacturing or installation stress — less common, but boards damaged by static during a previous service visit can fail later

That fourth cause is why we treat a repeatedly-reset 6607 seriously. Communication faults left unresolved can become hardware faults.

What happens if you leave it

The affected zones stay down, and unlike some faults this one will not intermittently recover.

The specific risk with 6602 is what people do about it. Repeatedly cycling power to force a few more hours of operation puts stress on components that are already compromised. What starts as one failed transmission processor can become a broader board failure, which is a materially more expensive repair.

  2. Rule out wiring first — verify terminals, continuity and power before condemning any board, because wiring can imitate hardware failure.
  3. Verify supply voltage to the affected device, since supply problems can present as transmission faults.
  4. Test the transmission components on the suspect board.
  5. Check for surge damage elsewhere — if a surge took out one board, others may be degraded but not yet failed.
  6. Confirm the network is clean after replacement, so we are not handing back a system with a second latent fault.
