Why Is My House So Dusty Even After Cleaning?

You clean thoroughly. Within a few days there is a visible film on the surfaces again. You clean again, and it comes back again.

At that point most people conclude they have unusually dusty air, or an unusually shedding pet, or simply a losing battle. Occasionally that is true. Far more often, the dust is not settling out of the air in your rooms — it is being delivered there, continuously, by the system that is supposed to be conditioning your house.

The question worth asking

Not how do I remove this dust, but where is it entering from.

A house generates some dust on its own: fabric fibres, skin cells, paper, cooking. That baseline is normal, and it accumulates at a rate you would describe as ordinary.

What separates an ordinary house from one that is dusty again within days is almost always an outside source being actively drawn in. And in a home with forced-air heating and cooling, there is an obvious candidate for what is doing the drawing.

How your ductwork moves attic air into your bedroom

Your air handler is a fan. It pulls air through the return ducts and pushes it out through the supply ducts. That pulling creates negative pressure on the return side — the ductwork there is at a lower pressure than the space around it.

Now consider where that return ductwork runs. In most Los Angeles homes: through the attic, or through a crawlspace.

Any gap in a return duct running through those spaces is not a neutral hole. It is an opening into a lower-pressure zone, which means air moves into the duct through it. Every time the system runs, it is drawing attic air into the airstream.

Attic air is not clean air. It contains:

  • Fibreglass and cellulose fibres shed by degrading insulation
  • Dust from the original construction, which never left
  • Wood and drywall particulate from decades of settling and any subsequent work
  • Whatever else has accumulated in a space nobody visits

That material now enters the ductwork and is distributed to every room the supply ducts reach. It settles on your surfaces. You clean it. The system runs again.

Why your filter does not catch it

This is the part that surprises people most, and it is a simple matter of position.

A filter only treats air that passes through it.

Your filter sits at one point in the system — usually at the return plenum or in a return grille. Air passing through that point gets filtered. But a leak in the return ductwork between the filter and the blower introduces unfiltered air into the airstream after the filtration has already happened.

That air has bypassed your filter entirely. It does not matter how good the filter is. You can fit the densest filter that will physically go in the slot and it will have no effect whatsoever on air that never goes near it.

Worse, a denser filter increases resistance, which slightly increases the pressure difference across the duct walls — the very thing driving the leakage. It is possible to make the problem marginally worse while feeling like you are addressing it.

Why duct cleaning “works for about a month”

This is the most common thing we hear from people who have already spent money on the problem.

Duct cleaning is a legitimate service and there are conditions that genuinely warrant it. Federal guidance is specific about them: substantial visible mould inside the ductwork, evidence of vermin, or ducts clogged badly enough that debris is visibly released into the rooms.

But note what cleaning does. It removes the material currently sitting in the ducts. It does not change how that material got there.

If the mechanism putting debris into your ducts is a set of leaks pulling attic air in, cleaning resets the system to empty and the leaks refill it. The timeline depends on how much your system runs and how bad the leakage is, but “it seemed better for a few weeks” is the predictable outcome.

Federal guidance makes the same point about mould specifically: unless the conditions causing the growth are corrected, the growth returns. The principle generalises. Cleaning without addressing the cause buys you time, not a solution.

What to do instead, in order

1. Have the leakage measured

Duct leakage is a measurable quantity, not a matter of opinion. A calibrated fan pressurises the duct system and the leakage rate is read directly.

Many California homeowners already have this number without knowing it — the test is generally required when heating or cooling equipment is replaced, verified by an independent rater before the permit closes. If you have replaced a system recently, the result exists.

2. Seal what is leaking

Connections get sealed with mastic rather than tape. Tape on ductwork in a Los Angeles attic fails — which is why so much of what we find was already sealed once, decades ago, by someone who assumed it would hold.

Disconnected branches, crushed runs and failed insulation get corrected at the same time. Leakage is measured again afterwards, so the improvement is a number rather than an assurance.

3. Then clean, if it is still warranted

With the leaks closed, cleaning the ducts actually holds. Do it in this order — sealing a system full of debris traps the debris in there.

4. Then improve filtration

Now a better filter treats the air you meant it to treat, because that is the air actually reaching it.

The signs that point at ducts rather than housekeeping

  • Dust returns within days, not weeks
  • Some rooms are noticeably worse than others
  • There are smells from the garage or crawlspace when the system runs
  • Registers show visible debris
  • Your bills seem high for the size of the house
  • The system runs constantly without satisfying the thermostat

Those last two share a cause with the dust. Air escaping supply ducts into the attic is conditioned air you paid for, and air entering return ducts from the attic is air the system now has to condition again.

The short version

If your house is dusty again within days of cleaning, you almost certainly do not have a cleaning problem. You have an air path problem: unfiltered air from a dirty space is being pulled into your ductwork and distributed through your home every time the system runs.

Removing the dust addresses the symptom. Closing the path is what stops it.
