The key distinction: this is a fault with the instrument, not with your pressure.

What this means for your building

The high pressure sensor monitors refrigerant pressure on the high side of the circuit. The system uses that reading for control decisions and, critically, for compressor protection.

JA reports that the sensor has failed, gone open or short circuit, or is returning a value the system knows cannot be real.

Pressure is not necessarily high. The system simply cannot see what it is.

These get conflated, and they are different problems:

E3 is a refrigerant condition. JA is an instrumentation fault. Treating a JA as a pressure problem sends a technician looking at coils, fans and charge when the fault is a sensor and its wiring.

Its companion is JC, the equivalent fault on the low pressure sensor.

How urgent is it?

Moderately urgent — more than a comfort sensor, less than a compressor fault.

The system has lost protective visibility on the high side. High pressure protection is one of the main things standing between a heat rejection problem and compressor damage. Without a reliable sensor, that protection cannot act on what it cannot measure.

Put plainly: if your coil fouls or your outdoor fan fails next month, the system may not catch it as early as it should.

What it typically costs

Low to medium.

The sensor is not an expensive component. The cost is access to the outdoor unit — rooftop or plant room, with appropriate safe working arrangements — plus the diagnostic time to confirm the sensor is genuinely faulty.

That confirmation matters. Occasionally the sensor is accurate and the wiring or control input is the problem, and replacing the sensor would achieve nothing.

What causes it

  • Connector working loose — vibration over years of operation
  • Cable damage — chafing, rodent damage, or disturbance during other work
  • Moisture ingress at the connector, common in rooftop units
  • Sensor failure — they age out
  • Wiring damage between the sensor and the control board
  • Damage during previous service — a lead pinched on reassembly

What happens if you leave it

Two things, one obvious and one not.

Protection is reduced. The system cannot detect a genuine high pressure condition, which is exactly the protection that prevents expensive compressor damage.

Other diagnostics become unreliable. Pressure readings feed several control and protection calculations. Bad data produces misleading codes elsewhere, and a technician working from those may chase a refrigerant or compressor problem that does not exist.

That second effect is the reason not to leave a sensor fault sitting. It makes every other fault on the system harder to interpret correctly.

  2. Inspect the connector and cable run for damage, moisture and looseness — frequently the actual fault.
  3. Verify the reading is genuinely wrong rather than reporting a real condition.
  4. Check wiring between the sensor and the control board.
  5. Review other active codes that may have been triggered by bad pressure data.
  6. Assess the companion sensor — if JC is also present, that points at something common to both.
  7. Consider nearby sensors while access is open, since rooftop access is the main cost.

  • Is JC showing too? Both together suggests a shared cause rather than two coincidental failures.
  • Has the unit been serviced recently? Sensor leads are commonly disturbed during other work.

  • E3 — High pressure switch activation. The genuine pressure condition this sensor helps detect.
  • J3 / J5 — Thermistor faults. Other sensor faults on the same unit, worth bundling if present.
  • L8 — Compressor overcurrent. What an undetected high pressure condition can eventually cause.
