L8 is often not a failed compressor

An instantaneous spike (L5) usually means something broke electrically inside the compressor.
Sustained high current (L8) more often means the compressor is perfectly healthy and working extremely hard against something it cannot overcome.
Two broad explanations:
The system is fighting a condition. High head pressure from a dirty coil, a failing outdoor fan, restricted airflow, refrigerant overcharge, or extreme ambient load. The compressor draws more current because it is doing more work.
The compressor is degrading. Internal mechanical wear means drawing more current for the same output. Here the overcurrent is a symptom of the compressor rather than a cause.
Establishing which you have is the whole job, and it determines whether this is a moderate repair or a major one.
How urgent is it?
Urgent. Sustained overcurrent is one of the clearest warnings you get before a compressor failure.
Compressors are rarely killed by single events. They are worn out by running outside their envelope repeatedly. A system throwing L8 that gets reset and run again is a compressor being consumed to buy operating hours.

If the driver is external — dirty coil, failing fan, obstructed airflow, overcharge — the repair is moderate and the compressor is likely recoverable. Coil cleaning is not a large job.
If the compressor is drawing excess current because of internal wear, you are approaching the largest repair on the system.
The gap between those outcomes is wide, which is exactly why diagnosis matters more here than on most codes. Caught early, you are usually still in the cheaper category.
What causes it
In rough order of how often we find them:
- Poor heat rejection — dirty outdoor coil, obstructed airflow, or a failing fan raising head pressure
- High pressure conditions generally, which is why L8 and E3 often appear together
- Refrigerant overcharge, increasing the work the compressor does
- Supply voltage problems — low voltage means higher current for the same power
- Compressor mechanical wear — bearings and internal clearances
- Extreme ambient conditions compounding any marginal fault
What happens if you leave it
The compressor keeps running against a load it cannot sustain, until it does not.
The sequence is consistent: a coil fouls gradually over a season, the compressor works progressively harder, L8 starts tripping on the hottest days, someone resets it through summer, and the compressor fails the following year.
Nearly every external cause of L8 is inexpensive relative to the compressor it threatens.
