Error U0 means refrigerant shortage. On a large commercial VRV system this is one of the most expensive faults there is, and it gets worse the longer it runs.

Can it wait?

No. If refrigerant is leaking, it is leaking right now, and the volume lost is what drives the repair cost.

If it is left unresolved

The leak grows and the charge keeps falling. Running a VRV system low on refrigerant starves the compressor of cooling and oil return, which risks turning an expensive repair into a compressor replacement.

If your Daikin VRV system is showing error code U0, the system does not have enough refrigerant.

On a large commercial VRV installation, this is the code with the highest cost ceiling short of compressor failure — and unlike most faults, it gets more expensive every day you wait.

What this means for your building

The system monitors refrigerant conditions and raises U0 when the charge is insufficient for safe operation.

Refrigerant does not get used up. It is a closed circuit. So if the level has dropped, one of three things is true:

  • It leaked out — the most common cause, and the expensive one
  • It cannot circulate properly — a restriction or a failed expansion valve producing the same signature
  • The system is reading incorrectly — a sensor fault, and the cheapest outcome

Ruling between those is the whole job, and it must happen before anyone adds refrigerant.

Why this one costs so much

VRV systems distribute refrigerant across long pipe runs, through branch selectors, to many indoor units. That means a large charge volume and a great many joints.

A proper leak repair involves:

  1. Locating the leak — isolating and testing sections across the installation
  2. Recovering the remaining charge rather than venting it
  3. Making the repair
  4. Nitrogen pressure testing to confirm the system holds
  5. Evacuating the system properly
  6. Recharging to the correct weight

Every one of those steps is necessary, and on a large system each takes real time. The refrigerant itself is also a substantial cost at commercial charge volumes.

This is why U0 sits at the top of the cost range while U4 sits near the bottom, despite both being “the system stopped.”

Why topping up is not a repair

This is the conversation we have most often on U0 calls, so it is worth being blunt.

Adding refrigerant will get your system running. It does not fix anything. The leak that emptied it is still there, and it is still leaking.

The practical consequences:

  • You pay for refrigerant repeatedly, on a schedule that gets shorter as the leak grows
  • Refrigerant is released to atmosphere, which carries regulatory weight at commercial charge volumes
  • The leak grows, because failing joints rarely stabilise
  • The compressor is at risk the whole time the system runs undercharged

We will tell you honestly when a top-up is a reasonable stopgap to keep tenants comfortable while a proper repair is scheduled. We will not present it as a fix.

How urgent is it?

Urgent, and the urgency is financial.

If refrigerant is escaping, it is escaping now. The amount lost directly determines what the recharge costs. There is no version of waiting that makes this cheaper.

There is equipment risk too. Refrigerant carries oil through the system and cools the compressor. A system running undercharged is running hot and under-lubricated.

What causes it

  • Leak at a joint, flare or braze — the most common
  • Leak at a branch selector or connection point
  • Damage to pipework from other trades, vibration, or building movement
  • Failed electronic expansion valve producing a similar signature without a leak
  • Restriction in the pipework or a blocked filter
  • Undercharge from previous work where the system was never correctly filled
  • Pressure sensor fault reporting a shortage that is not real

What happens if you leave it

Both problems compound.

The leak grows and the eventual recharge costs more.

The compressor wears. Poor oil return and elevated operating temperatures accumulate damage. Compressor replacement is the most expensive repair on a VRV system, and running undercharged is one of the standard routes to it.

A leak found early is a repair. The same leak ignored becomes a repair plus a compressor.

What we check

  1. Verify the reading is genuine before assuming a charge problem.
  2. Assess actual charge against system design.
  3. Leak detection across the installation, isolating sections to narrow the location.
  4. Inspect likely failure points — joints, branch selectors, connections, and anywhere exposed to vibration.
  5. Test expansion valve operation, since a restriction imitates undercharge.
  6. Check filters for blockage.
  7. Review service history — a system topped up before almost certainly has an unrepaired leak.

What you can tell us before we arrive

  • Has refrigerant been added before? The single most useful thing you can tell us. Prior top-ups mean a known, unrepaired leak.
  • When did performance start dropping? Capacity usually degrades before the code appears.
  • Has any work been done near the pipework? Ceiling work, tenant fit-outs, or anything that disturbed refrigerant lines.
  • E4 — Low pressure sensor activation. Frequently appears alongside a genuine charge shortage.
  • L5 / L8 — Compressor faults. What undercharge eventually causes if left running.

What does error code U0 mean on a Daikin VRV system?

The system has detected insufficient refrigerant and stopped. On commercial VRV the usual cause is a leak somewhere in the pipework, though a failed expansion valve or a restriction producing the same pressure signature can trigger it too. Diagnosis has to distinguish them before anyone adds refrigerant.

Why is U0 so expensive to fix on a commercial VRV system?

Scale. A large VRV system holds a substantial refrigerant charge across long pipe runs with many joints. Locating the leak, recovering remaining refrigerant, repairing, nitrogen pressure testing, evacuating and recharging is a significant job, and the refrigerant itself is a real cost.

Can you just add refrigerant to clear a U0 error?

Adding refrigerant restores operation but it is not a repair. Refrigerant is not consumed, so if the level dropped it escaped somewhere. Without finding the leak you will pay for refrigerant repeatedly and the underlying fault continues to grow.

Does a U0 error always mean there is a leak?

Not always, but a leak is the first thing to rule out. A failed electronic expansion valve, a restriction in the pipework, or a faulty pressure sensor can produce similar readings. Diagnosis has to distinguish them before anyone adds refrigerant.

Can low refrigerant damage my VRV compressor?
