Preliminary code 4152. Mitsubishi reports many faults twice — a preliminary code when a problem is first detected, then the definite code once it is confirmed. Seeing 4152 is an early warning before the system locks out.

If your Mitsubishi City Multi system is showing error code 4102, one phase of its power supply is missing.

This is one of the few VRF codes where the correct response is to leave the system off and get the electrical supply checked before anything else.

Commercial VRF outdoor units run on three-phase power. All three phases have to be present and healthy.

When one goes missing, the system detects it and refuses to start. That refusal is deliberate and protective: a three-phase motor running on two phases draws heavily unbalanced current and overheats within minutes.

The key point for a building manager: this is usually an electrical fault, not an air conditioning fault. The equipment is reporting a supply problem accurately.

The preliminary code

4152 is the preliminary code for 4102. If it appears in your history, the system detected the condition intermittently before it became permanent.

Intermittent phase loss is worth taking seriously. It usually means a connection is degrading — a lug loosening, a contactor pitting, a fuse clip weakening. Those get worse, and they generate heat while they do.

How urgent is it?

Critical, but not in the way most codes are.

The system is currently safe because it stopped. The danger is entirely in what happens if someone forces it to run. Compressor damage from single-phasing accumulates in minutes, not months. It is one of the fastest ways to destroy the most expensive component on a VRF system.

There is also a building safety dimension. A degrading connection capable of dropping a phase is generating heat at the point of failure. That is worth an electrician’s attention regardless of the air conditioning.

What it typically costs

Low to medium — frequently one of the cheaper faults on this list, which is a pleasant surprise given how alarming it looks.

Common causes are a blown fuse, a tripped breaker, a loose lug, or a failed contactor. Those are modest electrical repairs.

Cost rises if the underlying problem is degraded supply wiring, a failed disconnect, or damage from heat at a failing connection.

The expensive outcome is only reached by forcing the system to run.

What happens if you leave it

If you leave it off, nothing gets worse. The system is protecting itself and that is the correct state.

The risk is entirely in overriding it. We have seen buildings bypass phase protection to keep tenants comfortable through a hot afternoon and destroy a compressor doing it. The saving was a few hours of comfort. The cost was the most expensive component on the system.

There is also a real, if less discussed, risk in leaving a degrading electrical connection unaddressed. Connections that fail progressively generate heat while they do.

  3. Inspect connections for looseness, corrosion, and heat damage at every termination.

  6. Verify the detection circuit if all three phases prove healthy at the unit.
  7. Assess compressor condition if there is any indication the system ran while single-phased.
