What causes it
Rooftop commercial units take a beating, and it shows here:
- Debris or obstruction — leaves, packaging, bird nesting, or damage to the fan guard
- Wind loading — sustained wind is genuinely hard on rooftop fan assemblies, and can back-drive fans when the system is off, stressing bearings over time
- Bearing wear — fans run a lot of hours in a demanding environment
- Motor failure from heat cycling and weather exposure
- Fan inverter or drive board fault — the motor is fine but not being driven correctly
- Wiring or connector damage from vibration and weather
What happens if you leave it
The fan fault does not stay a fan fault.
Without airflow across the outdoor coil, pressure rises. The compressor works against that pressure, drawing more current and running hotter. High pressure protection trips, overload protection trips, and discharge temperature climbs.
Every one of those is harder on the compressor than the last. A fan motor replaced promptly is a contained repair. The same fault left running through a hot week can put the compressor at risk — and that is an order of magnitude more expensive.
