This is the code where the right response is to leave the system off until it has been diagnosed. Continuing to run it is genuinely capable of doubling the repair.
What this means for your building
The inverter drives the compressor at variable speed and monitors current continuously. Excessive current is the main way both inverters and compressors destroy themselves, so the protection is aggressive.
CH21 covers two related conditions:
- Compressor overcurrent — the compressor is drawing more current than it should
- IPM fault — the intelligent power module that switches power to the compressor has faulted
The shutdown is immediate rather than graceful, because the alternative is component damage.
The question that determines your cost
Did the compressor fail, or did the inverter?
Those are very different repairs. An inverter board is a significant but bounded cost. A compressor is the largest job on the system.
Worse, either can cause the other. A compressor that shorts can destroy the power module driving it. A failing power module can damage a healthy compressor. Which is why the diagnosis has to establish the direction of causation, not just find something broken.
Two ways to read the code
LG displays faults in two formats:
- CH21 on indoor units and wired remote controllers
- 21 on the outdoor unit’s seven-segment display
Same fault. If your contractor refers to “a 21” and your remote shows CH21, you are discussing the same thing.
How urgent is it?
Critical, and the urgency is about not restarting it.
Most faults get gradually worse. This one can cascade immediately.
The pattern we most want to prevent: a building resets CH21 repeatedly through a weekend to keep tenants comfortable, and converts a compressor failure into a compressor and inverter failure. The comfort gained was hours. The cost added was substantial.
There is no hazard to occupants. The risk is entirely to your equipment, and it is realised at each restart.
What it typically costs
Highest — the top of the range for Multi V faults.
Toward the lower end, an inverter or IPM repair. Toward the upper end, compressor replacement involving:
- The compressor itself, a major component on commercial equipment
- Refrigerant recovery before the work and recharge after
- System cleanup, if the compressor failed electrically and contaminated the circuit
- Substantial labour handling a heavy component in a rooftop or plant location
That cleanup step matters. When a compressor fails electrically, debris and acid can circulate through the refrigerant circuit. Skipping the cleanup risks the replacement compressor failing the same way.

- Compressor winding failure, short or ground fault — the expensive scenario
- IPM or inverter board failure — the compressor may be perfectly healthy
- Mechanical compressor problems causing excessive current draw under load
- Supply voltage problems stressing the inverter
- Cooling problems at the power module, allowing it to overheat
- Consequential damage from an earlier untreated fault
What happens if you leave it
Leave it off and every option stays open.
Keep restarting and you risk taking a healthy inverter down with a failed compressor, damaging a healthy compressor with a failing inverter, spreading contamination through the refrigerant circuit, or turning a diagnosable fault into a system rebuild.
