No. The outdoor unit cannot drive the compressor reliably, so the system is effectively out of service.

If it is left unresolved

The system cannot control the compressor properly. Continuing to attempt operation with unreliable communication between control and drive stages risks damaging both.

Detail codes

  • CH52 / 52 Communication error between the main control board and the inverter within the outdoor unit.
  • 521 Master outdoor unit — main PCB cannot receive signal from the inverter compressor controller PCB.
  • 522 Slave outdoor unit 1 — same fault on that module.
  • 523 Slave outdoor unit 2 — same fault on that module.

If your LG Multi V system is showing CH52 — or 52 on the outdoor unit display — the boards inside your outdoor unit have stopped communicating with each other.

This one gets confused with CH05 regularly, and the distinction matters because the fault is in a completely different place.

CH52 is not CH05

Both are communication faults. They are not the same problem:

A technician sent to trace building control wiring on a CH52 is looking in the wrong place entirely. The problem is inside a single cabinet.

What this means for your building

The outdoor unit contains a main control board that decides what the system should do, and an inverter that drives the compressor accordingly. Those two have to communicate constantly.

When that internal communication fails, the control board cannot reliably direct the inverter, and the inverter cannot report back. The outdoor unit stops.

Practically, the whole system served by that outdoor unit is out of service — not just one zone.

How urgent is it?

Urgent. The outdoor unit cannot drive the compressor reliably, which means no heating or cooling from that system.

There is no safety hazard. But there is little value in attempting to run it: any operation you get with unreliable communication between the control and drive stages is not something to depend on, and it puts stress on both.

What it typically costs

Moderate — between a wiring repair and a compressor job.

At the cheaper end, an internal harness or connector problem: a plug that has vibrated loose, a damaged lead, a corroded connection. Inexpensive parts, modest labour.

At the higher end, a failed control board or inverter board. That is a real component cost plus the labour to fit and commission it.

Diagnosis distinguishes them, and it is worth doing before ordering anything, because the two outcomes differ substantially.

What causes it

  • Loose or damaged internal harness between the boards — vibration over years of operation
  • Corroded connectors, particularly in rooftop units where moisture reaches the cabinet
  • Power surge damage to the communication circuits
  • Control board failure
  • Inverter board failure
  • Moisture ingress into the outdoor unit cabinet
  • Heat damage in units running hot or with restricted ventilation

Notice how many are environmental. Rooftop outdoor units in Los Angeles endure heat cycling and weather exposure that internal electronics were never going to enjoy.

What happens if you leave it

The system stays out of service, so the operational impact is immediate rather than gradual.

The equipment risk is subtler. Repeatedly attempting to run with intermittent communication between the control board and inverter means the compressor may receive incomplete or inconsistent commands. That is not a state to leave a compressor in.

If the underlying cause is a degrading connection, it also tends to worsen — intermittent at first, then permanent, and sometimes taking a board with it.

  1. Inspect internal harnesses and connectors between the control and inverter boards — often the actual fault and the cheapest outcome.
  2. Check for moisture or corrosion inside the cabinet.
  3. Verify supply voltage to both boards.
  4. Test communication between the boards.
  5. Inspect both boards for visible damage, particularly heat or surge damage.
  6. Check cabinet sealing and ventilation, since environmental ingress causes recurrence.
  7. Look for surge evidence elsewhere if an electrical event preceded the fault.

  • Was there a recent electrical event? Outage, surge, or electrical work in the building.
  • Is the code constant or intermittent? Intermittent points more toward a connection than a failed board.
  • Any signs of water ingress at the outdoor unit? Damaged panels, failed seals, or pooling.
  • How old is the unit and where is it sited? Rooftop units in exposed positions fail this way sooner.
  • CH05 / CH53 — Indoor to outdoor communication. Similar symptom, entirely different location.
  • CH21 — Inverter compressor overcurrent or IPM fault. Can appear alongside inverter problems.
  • CH26 — Compressor start failure. Also involves the drive electronics.
